Each mountain forest has its own ecological characteristics and ancient atmosphere; the Leaf Birds are observed and brought forth out of these very roots. Grounded in my explorations of local ecological environments, the work takes as its objects of inquiry the traces of plants and animals that have undergone long evolutionary processes and have persisted into the present—traces gathered through walking and attentive looking. These beings are born out of embodied contact and dialogue with the mountain range, emerging from those moments that strike a deep chord. When I was creating this work in Iceland, my beloved parrot passed away, yet that night it came to me in a dream. Thus, as I have long sensed, the soulful quality of this work is not just about any known form of existence; rather, it points toward a kind of unknown we cannot put into words, and toward that subtle attunement between spirit and feeling.

As part of the current state of research on the Crystalline Layer, species and their connections to the environment speak among reverie through the luminous aura of imagination.
